Artifact B1: Personal Mission Statement
This entry contains my personal mission statement first conceptualized in SDAD 579: Student Development Capstone Seminar. This entry demonstrates and represents the guiding values I aspire to live my life by. I have always had a strong sense of my personal values, but this is the first time I have articulated them in written form. I realized communicating my personal values is crucial to student affairs because they inform my professional values and mission statement (Artifact B2: Professional Mission Statement).
This entry addresses learning outcomes number 4 (Understanding and fostering diversity, justice and a sustainable world formed by a global perspective and Jesuit Catholic tradition) and number 10 (Establishing and enhancing professional identity). I draw from the Jesuit tradition of social justice and service to inform my personal mission statement. Furthermore, by establishing and communicating my values, I define my identity as a professional more clearly.

My personal mission is composed of three pillars, which I strive to live out in my life.
The first pillar is to meet all people where they are at and lead with love. Love in this sense is not an emotion but an action. While I don’t have the ability to emotionally love every single person in the world, I can show every person love through what I do. Whoever I meet, whoever I interact with, I strive to approach them from a place of care, understanding, and empathy. The second pillar of my personal mission is service. I want to be involved with my community, both local and global, to create a more equitable, compassionate, and loving world. A key part of my identity values serving others and I dedicate a part of my life to structured service, using my talents and the resources I am privileged with. While living in a culture that devalues service, I have intentionally made service a part of my core being. The last pillar is recognizing that every single person is unique, a gift on earth, and worthy of opportunity. As a multiracial individual, I have personally felt the effects of marginalization of different systems in our culture. I use my narrative as a foundation and listen to other’s stories. When I am cognizant of this pillar, I am able to better show love and serve each and every individual. “Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle.” –Plato “Love does.” –Bob Goff “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace” 1Pe 4:10 NIV |
